We can all see how southern Europe is ablaze. But simply being horrified doesn’t help. All that remains is to take action. We’re sowing seeds in the peat at Grimsås Marsh as part of the fight against peat extraction.

🌻 Sunflowers are a symbol of resistance 🌻

When the world is ablaze and communities are engulfed by the flames, all that remains is resistance.
We must do what the politicians fail to do.

At Grimsås Mosse, we’re doing the work ourselves. We’re sowing seeds on the bog that Neova has destroyed. The peat needs to be completely sterile and dead for Neova to be able to use it. But in a world that’s on fire, we need living bogs. Peat extraction must be banned.

At dusk, around 40 ordinary, deeply concerned people went out and scattered sunflower seeds all over the huge pile of peat that Neova had dug up from the bog. It was the fifth day of our sowing campaign. Today we’re continuing, tomorrow too, and the day after that, and the day after that… until Neova packs up and goes home.

This is what the Peat General writes on his Facebook page:

“Industrial sabotage – hundreds of millions of years of hell. 
The ‘Återställ Våtmarker’ association has sabotaged the peat extraction site in Grimsås.
In the worst-case scenario, we’re talking about hundreds of millions, and the bog may well be destroyed for all future harvests.
I’m heading down there on Wednesday. If you’re a politician and would like to come along, please do get in touch.”

The bog has been destroyed. A bog that took 10,000 years to form. Who has sabotaged Grimsås Bog? We wonder. A bog grows by 1 millimetre per year. Peat is a fossil fuel and worse than oil, coal and gas.

Not the landowner, not the residents of Grimsås, not any political parties in the municipality or the region. The County Administrative Board admits that they would never have given their consent.
Whilst the government has made the restoration of wetlands a priority climate target, multinational companies are being allowed to dig up our bogs.
Talk about hypocrisy! How can Neova’s exploitative practices continue when nobody – absolutely nobody – wants them there!?!
It is a political disaster without equal.

We are doctors, psychologists, engineers, IT technicians, bricklayers, sixth-form teachers, researchers, playwrights, nurses, joiners, musicians, personal assistants, writers, artists, adult education centre teachers, postgraduate students, undergraduates, pensioners and a chess champion. Neova was refused permission to amend the agreement for Grimsås Mosse from energy peat extraction to horticultural peat. The County Administrative Board said NO. Yet they are still extracting horticultural peat.
Every bucketful they extract is illegal, so now we’re stopping the machines, day after day after day – week after week.

The Secretary-General of the lobbying organisation Svensk Torv, who calls himself the “Peat General”, visited the peat mine in Grimsås today. We sent an invitation and wanted to treat him to some coffee and cake. The Peat General chose not to come.

This is what the Peat General wrote on his Facebook page ahead of the visit to Grimsås:

“Industrial sabotage – hundreds of millions of years of hell. 
The ‘Återställ Våtmarker’ Association has sabotaged the peat extraction site in Grimsås.
In the worst-case scenario, we’re talking about hundreds of millions, and the bog may well be destroyed for all future harvesting.
I’m heading down there on Wednesday. If you’re a politician and would like to come along, please do get in touch.
We cannot have a system where legitimate, authorised activity is not only halted but also sabotaged by these activists.”

We’re just wondering: who is it that has sabotaged Grimsås Mosse! 

We’ll carry on sowing grass seed at the Grimsås peat mine until Neova packs up and goes home. Peat bogs act as natural firebreaks and help to limit forest fires. Europe is ablaze. 350,000 people have been evacuated in France and Spain. The fire is devouring our homes and reducing them to ashes. Livestock are being burnt alive whilst trapped. The flames are consuming everything in their path.
Animals and birds have no chance of escape.

Wake up!

Without nature, humanity cannot survive. We must begin to restore what we have destroyed and leave in peace the little that is still wild and alive.

Peat bogs are our lifeline, say the scientists.

They are natural carbon sinks, help to limit forest fires, replenish our groundwater, purify water, help to prevent flooding and are home to thousands of red-listed species.

During yesterday’s campaign, around 40 ‘wetland restorers’ were met by a wonderful show of support. Many Grimsås residents lined the path down to the nature reserve holding signs. At the entrance, we were met by even more people, along with coffee and homemade cakes with blueberries and raspberries♥️

The sowing campaigns are growing. Today, around 50 of us took part in yet another wonderfully uplifting sowing campaign.

Today, several Finnish participants have done what the entire Swedish population should be doing: blocking Neova’s fossil fuel industry.
