We must do what the politicians fail to do. At Grimsås Mosse, we’re doing the work ourselves. We’re sowing seeds on the bog that Neova has destroyed. The peat needs to be completely sterile and dead for Neova to be able to use it. But in a world that’s on fire, we need living bogs. Peat extraction must be banned. At dusk, around 40 ordinary, deeply concerned people went out and scattered sunflower seeds all over the huge pile of peat that Neova had dug up from the bog. It was the fifth day of our sowing campaign. Today we’re continuing, tomorrow too, and the day after that, and the day after that… until Neova packs up and goes home. Help us with a bag of seeds. The ‘Återställ Våtmarker’ association has sabotaged the peat extraction site in Grimsås. In the worst-case scenario, we’re talking about hundreds of millions, and the bog may well be destroyed for all future harvests. I’m heading down there on Wednesday. If you’re a politician and would like to come along, please do get in touch.” The bog has been destroyed. A bog that took 10,000 years to form. Who has sabotaged Grimsås Bog? We wonder. The County Administrative Board admits that they would never have given their consent. Whilst the government has made the restoration of wetlands a priority climate target, multinational companies are being allowed to dig up our bogs. Talk about hypocrisy! Neova was refused permission to amend the agreement for Grimsås Mosse from energy peat extraction to horticultural peat. The County Administrative Board said NO. Yet they are still extracting horticultural peat. Every bucketful they extract is illegal, so now we’re stopping the machines, day after day after day – week after week. We sent an invitation and wanted to treat him to some coffee and cake. The Peat General chose not to come. This is what the Peat General wrote on his Facebook page ahead of the visit to Grimsås: “Industrial sabotage – hundreds of millions of years of hell. The ‘Återställ Våtmarker’ Association has sabotaged the peat extraction site in Grimsås. The fire is devouring our homes and reducing them to ashes. Livestock are being burnt alive whilst trapped. The flames are consuming everything in their path. Animals and birds have no chance of escape. Wake up! Without nature, humanity cannot survive. We must begin to restore what we have destroyed and leave in peace the little that is still wild and alive. Peat bogs are our lifeline, say the scientists. They are natural carbon sinks, help to limit forest fires, replenish our groundwater, purify water, help to prevent flooding and are home to thousands of red-listed species. Many Grimsås residents lined the path down to the nature reserve holding signs. Today, around 50 of us took part in yet another wonderfully uplifting sowing campaign.
